Medicare Advantage (Part C)

What are Medicare Advantage Plans?

Medicare Advantage plans, also known as Part C, are an alternative to Original Medicare. These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.

Medicare Advantage plans provide the benefits of Original Medicare Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) and may also include Part D (prescription drug coverage).

Benefits are dependent on your zip code, contact a licensed insurance agent to see options available to you.

What are the Benefits of Medicare Advantage Plans?

Medicare Advantage plans replace your Original Medicare Part A and B coverage and benefits. Offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare, these plans may provide additional benefits and features beyond Original Medicare, potentially resulting in cost savings for qualified individuals.

Some benefits include:

  • Original Medicare generally requires a 20% coinsurance after meeting your deductible for most services. These costs can accumulate. Medicare Advantage plans typically have fixed copayments for doctor visits, which may help you manage your expenses.

  • Medicare Advantage plans offer a range of coverage options and benefits that are specific to the plan you choose, providing flexibility based on your individual needs and preferences.

Medicare Part D

What is Medicare Part D?

Medicare Part D gives coverage for prescription drugs and is provided by private insurance companies.

When do I need Medicare Part D?

  • Many Medicare Advantage plans come with built-in Part D prescription drug coverage, offering a convenient all-in-one solution for your healthcare needs.

  • Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans do not cover prescription drugs. To get prescription drug coverage, you can enroll in a standalone Part D plan alongside your Medigap plan.

  • Original Medicare does not provide prescription drug coverage. By enrolling in a Part D plan, you can ensure you have the prescription drug coverage you need.

How much is Medicare Part D?

There are typically two types of costs with Medicare Part D:

  • Plan premium

  • Prescription drug costs (copays)

Each plan includes a list of covered medications, known as a "formulary." Medications are often categorized into different "tiers," with each tier having a different cost.

A licensed agent can assist you in estimating your costs and finding a plan tailored to your needs. Additionally, savings programs and options like preferred pharmacy networks are available to help lower your expenses.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

What are Medicare Supplement plans?

Medicare Supplement plans, also known as Medigap plans, run in conjunction with Original Medicare.

These supplements help cover the 'gaps' left by Original Medicare. Since Original Medicare only covers 80% of your Part A and Part B expenses, the remaining 20% can be substantial, especially in the case of serious medical conditions.

What do Medigap plans cover?

Medicare Supplement plans provide coverage for copays, coinsurance and deductibles left behind by Original Medicare.

Medigap plans may cover most or all coinsurance costs for:

  • Inpatient hospital visits

  • Skilled nursing services

  • Hospice services

  • Part-time home health care

They may cover coinsurance or copay costs for Part B medical services and equipment including:

  • Doctors appointments

  • Outpatient care

  • Durable Medical Equipment

  • Lab work

There are several important advantages provided by Medigap plans including:

  • National Coverage - your plan will be accepted anywhere that accepts Medicare

  • No networks or prior authorizations - any hospital or doctor that uses Medicare can be chosen

  • No referrals - see specialists you want without the hassle

What do Medigap plans not cover?

Medigap plans do not cover the same services Original Medicare doesn't, such as:

  • Dental, vision and hearing benefits

  • Prescription drug benefits

A stand-alone Part D plan is a great way to enhance your coverage, helping you pay for prescription drugs.

Beneficiaries with a Medigap plan can opt to add an ancillary plan for dental, vision, and hearing benefits.

What are the types of Medigap plans?

There are 10 types of Medicare Supplement plans that are offered in most states.

These types of plans are named by a letter: A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, N.

Each letter offers a different level of coverage.

These plans are standardized and offered by private insurance companies. For each letter, the coverage levels will remain the same between each company, but will differ in premium costs.

For example, a Medigap Plan G from Company A will have the same benefits as Company B, but the cost per month of each plan may be different.

There are some differences with Medicare Supplement plan standardization in Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Ancillary Plans

Standalone ancillary plans provide extra benefits beyond basic coverage. These plans can include:

  • Dental, vision & hearing (DVH)

  • Hospital indemnity

  • Heart attack, cancer, stroke

Ancillary plans offer extra coverage that may not be included in your current plan.

For those with a Medigap plan, a DVH plan can add benefits for dental, vision, and hearing care that aren’t covered.

A hospital indemnity plan can offer additional financial protection and peace of mind if your existing plan has high inpatient hospital costs.
