A tangled, dusty cord in the corner of a living room

Cut the Cord

Read Time: 3 min

Ten years ago, I discontinued my cable service and was left with a hideous cord attached to the wall. It was always in the way, so I kept it hidden behind furniture. Like most of us, that black wire is a staple in our homes and it seemed inconceivable to remove it myself. So, I lived with it, even though I knew it no longer served a purpose in my life. I felt like I was stuck with it, until that day, January 27, 2018, when I made a major change!

The Moment of Realization

At the time, I had been very focused on living a life of prosperity and rejuvenation and I started the process by clearing clutter and a bedroom makeover. While cleaning, I vividly remember picking up the cord to vacuum underneath it. I held the cord in my hand, looked down at it and something in my mind....switched.

In that moment, I realized that it wasn't about "the cord", it was much deeper. For ten years, I'd been attached to a version of myself that no longer existed and I could no longer keep it hidden, it was time for me to release the years of emotional bondage that was causing so much underlying stress.

I immediately grabbed a pair of nearby scissors and began to cut vigorously! The cord was thick, had many layers and my scissors were dull, but I persisted.

The instant it detached, I held it in my hand, looked at it and began to cry. I was finally free! This moment had such an impact, that I took a photo to remember its significance. I wound the cord tightly and threw it in the trash, then proceeded to remove “the cord” from every other room in my house.

A Life of Stagnation: Many of us live in "quiet desperation," waiting for things to get better. But "better" only comes when you're willing to make the cut.

The Next Level: Getting to the next level starts with an image of where you want to go and taking just one step in that direction. And not only that, it takes a strong belief in yourself that you can achieve the desires in your heart. Then, you set goals to achieve those desires.

Taking Action: It's important to reflect on our inner and outer state to assess the things that are no longer of value in our lives and safely confront the deep-rooted emotional attachments that are holding us back. Sometimes we can't do it alone, and may need to consult with a professional to help guide us - but we must be ready to do the work.

A Life of Freedom: I was so overjoyed to have cut the cord, because I learned that on this journey called life, there will be many levels to attain, and just like a strong plant, sometimes life pricks and prunes us to bring out the best version of ourselves.

I can’t tell you when you’ll have your "aha" moment, but I want to encourage you to evaluate your life and take a long hard look at the people, places or things that are weighing you down and if they are no longer bringing you joy and peace, then make up your mind to let them go!
