[Catching the Reward of the Congregation and Catching the Rak‘ah]
He who makes takbeer before the tasleem of the imam, has caught up with the congregation. 350
This is because there is no definitive proof that the boys are to be placed behind the men except for a report in (D) from Abi Mâlik al-Ash‘ari, but it has been deemed weak by Hadith scholars because of the presence of Shahr ibn Ḥawshab in the chain. Additionally, the Prophet’s command to have adults of knowledge and understanding pray behind him (M – from Abi Mas‘ood) refers only to that part of the first row that was behind him (SA). Some scholars understood it to be an encouragement for the knowledgeable adults to be behind him, not a prohibition for others. The sound report from Ubayy ibn Ka‘b (RA), in which he grabbed a young man from the first row and stood in his place, is about the first row and probably the middle part of it. Moreover, ‘Amr ibn Salamah led his people in prayer, during the time of the Prophet (SA), at the age of seven. (Ag) Besides, sending the boys to the back could be discouraging and disheartening to them, particularly if done with harshness. It could also lead to more noise from their rows during the prayer, which could be avoided if they were allowed to pray amongst the adults. In addition, many parents feel uncomfortable leaving their three or four-year-olds alone unsupervised while they are praying. Flexibility must be shown in this regard. The children must be taught the etiquettes of the masjid by their parents, yet tolerance must also be shown to them. It is imperative in the West that we make our mosques inviting to all, particularly to children and younger individuals
350 This is the madh-hab (A) + (+H, +M, +S) if he makes takbeer before the imam makes the first tasleem. (a) + (-t): He must catch one rak‘ah, which is attainable by catching the bowing, because the Prophet (SA) said:
"He who catches up with one rak‘ah has caught up with the prayer." (Ag – from Abu Hurayrah)
He who catches the bowing has caught the rak‘ah.351 Otherwise, he has not.
This hadith would certainly apply according to the madh-hab and majority (A) + (+M, +S) to the Jumu‘ah prayer, in which case he only needs to pray a second rak‘ah to complete the prayer. If he does not catch the second bowing with the imam, then he must pray four rak‘ahs to make the dhuhr prayer, instead of two for Jumu‘ah. With regard to the traveler praying behind the resident, by agreement of the four madh-habs, he will finish the full prayer and not shorten it, even if he caught up with the congregation right before the tasleem. As for the reward for praying with the congregation, it is hoped that Allah (ST) will grant it to anyone who catches up with any part of it. The Prophet (SA) said:
“Pray what you catch [with the congregation] and make up what you miss.” (Ag – from Abu Hurayrah)
If he were not going to get the reward of the congregation, he would have been advised to wait for a second congregation instead of joining the first one that is about to finish.
351 For the Messenger of Allah (SA) said:
“He who catches up with the bowing has caught up with the rak‘ah.” (D, Ba – from Abu Hurayrah. al-Albâni:S)
