Intro to Hand Rejuvenation

Hand rejuvenation using Micro-Fat grafting has been found to enhance the quality of the skin and appearance. Research has identified adipose-derived adult stem cells. These are stem cells within living fat, which have proven to be useful to enhance the look of the hands. This is why other fat grafting procedures have been successful in other areas such as the lips, cheeks, buttocks, breasts, and any other areas with a soft tissue deficit. Once the patient’s fat is carefully taken from the selected donor site it will be concentrated and prepared to be injected into the patient’s tissues to obtain fullness and boost their appearance. It is important to avoid other methods, such as laser-assisted liposuction and ultrasonic-assisted liposuction, for harvesting the fat since this destroys the fat. The method used by Dr. Fairbanks optimizes fat grafting in Salt Lake City.

Procedure Details for Hand Rejuvenation

Hand rejuvenation can be done under local anesthesia with sedation in a surgical center. Both the hands and a selected donor site are marked before the operation. The donor site may be almost any area of the body where excess fat is found. A very small, discreet incision is made and a thin hollow tube, called a cannula, is slipped through the incision to instill a solution that helps decrease the amount of bleeding that could occur. An additional set of cannulas is are placed through the same incisions and fat is carefully withdrawn. It is then centrifuged in order to concentrate the stem cells within the fat. Using ultra-fine cannulas, the fat and stem cells are injected into the patient’s tissues on the back of the hands.

Recovery

1. 1-2 weeks off of work is recommended

2. Excessive motion of the hands is discouraged during the healing process

3. Heavy lifting discouraged during the healing process

4. Compression binder or garment is worn over fat harvest areas for 2-4 weeks

5. Pain medication is given for discomfort

Recovery from fat grafting is not as difficult as may be expected. Excessive motion of the hands and heavy lifting are discouraged during the healing process. Minimal motion is encouraged since this allows for the fat graft to become vascularized by the new blood supply. This allows for the fat to heal in the proper position. With regards to the liposuction or fat harvest areas, a binder or compression garment is worn for 2-6 weeks. This compresses the skin and helps to control swelling. One to 2 weeks off of work is encouraged. Recovery after surgery is patient-dependent as some are more resilient than others. Pain medication is given to make any discomfort tolerable.
