Additional Free Report Circumstances
You may be entitled to additional free credit reports if:
You've been denied credit, employment, or insurance based on your credit report (within 60 days)
You're unemployed and seeking employment
You're on public assistance
You believe your report contains errors due to fraud or identity theft
You live in certain states with additional free report provisions
Lend money or provide financing
Make credit decisions or approve loans
Provide legal advice or legal representation
Provide tax advice or accounting services
Act as attorneys, CPAs, or fiduciaries
Guarantee specific outcomes or credit score increases
Control the actions of creditors, credit bureaus, or lenders
Remove accurate, timely, or verifiable information from credit reports
All decisions regarding credit reporting and lending are made solely by third parties (credit bureaus, creditors, lenders) according to federal law.
Credit bureaus must ensure the information in your file is accurate
They must investigate disputes within 30-45 days
They must correct or delete inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable information
Right to Dispute
You can dispute any information you believe is inaccurate or incomplete
Credit bureaus must investigate unless your dispute is frivolous
Creditors must also investigate disputes and report results to bureaus
Right to Add a Consumer Statement
If a dispute doesn't resolve in your favor, you can add a 100-word statement to your file
This statement will be included in future credit reports
Right to Know Who Has Accessed Your Report
Credit bureaus must provide a list of everyone who has accessed your report:
2 years for inquiries related to employment
year for all other inquiries (credit applications, etc.)
Right to Notification
If you're denied credit, insurance, or employment based on your credit report, the company must:
Provide you with the name and contact information of the credit bureau that provided the report
Inform you of your right to obtain a free copy of the report
Inform you of your right to dispute inaccurate information

You can place a security freeze on your credit file to prevent new credit from being opened in your name
