How to Stay on Track During the Holidays Without Putting Your Fitness Goals on Hold
As each new year rolls around, it’s common to hear stories of how holiday indulgences threw fitness routines off course. But what if, instead of starting fresh in January, you stayed consistent—or even kick-started a new habit—through the holiday season? That’s two extra months to build momentum and set yourself up for success in 2025!
The holidays can feel like a whirlwind, especially when you’re juggling family gatherings, school events, and festive treats. As a parent of three, I know how easy it is to let fitness slide during this time. But I’ve found that maintaining a few simple habits—just 15–20 minutes a day—can make all the difference. Here’s how you can keep your balance and still enjoy the season!
When you hold onto a few healthy routines during the holiday hustle, you’re not just maintaining progress—you’re building resilience for the year ahead. The holidays are about joy and connection, which includes enjoying special treats. With these strategies, you can stay active, feel great, and still savor the season:
Heading to a holiday event? Try eating a protein-rich snack, like a shake or a handful of nuts, before you go. Protein helps you feel full and makes it easier to enjoy party foods without overindulging. I love this approach—it’s quick, simple, and keeps my energy steady while managing holiday prep and shuttling the kids around.
The holidays can disrupt your usual workout routine, but staying active doesn’t have to be complicated. Consider options like:
Family walks to admire holiday lights
Quick bodyweight workouts at home
Playing active games like tag with the kids
If you’re a gym member, check out semi-private sessions, group classes, or travel-friendly workout plans. Even short bursts of movement add up over time.
When it’s time for big holiday meals, try using a smaller plate to manage portions naturally. Pair your food with water or herbal tea to stay hydrated and balanced. Personally, I’ve found that mindful eating—taking time to savor each bite—helps me enjoy all my favorite dishes without feeling overly full. It’s a great habit to share with the whole family!
If you’re enjoying drinks this season, try the "2/3 Rule" for moderation:
No more than 2 drinks per evening
Limit to 7 drinks total per week
Avoid drinking on more than 2 consecutive nights
This approach helps me stay energized for morning workouts and fully present for family time.
With two months left in 2024, you have plenty of time to solidify healthy habits and enter 2025 with confidence. Even small changes can make a big difference. Stick with a few of these strategies, and you’ll not only enjoy the holidays—you’ll set the tone for a strong and healthy new year.
